Where to Buy Bonsai Trees in the UK

You can buy a bonsai in the UK from three kinds of place: online marketplaces like Amazon, specialist bonsai nurseries, and garden centres or supermarkets. Each has a place. What matters most is buying a species that suits where it will live, from a seller who ships live plants properly.

Amazon and other online sellers

Convenient and usually the cheapest, and many listings are sold by real UK nurseries rather than Amazon itself. The catch is that a photo shows a typical tree, not the one you will get. Read the listing for pot size and height including the pot, check recent reviews for how trees arrived, and prefer sellers who say the tree is nursery-grown in the UK.

Every tree on this site links to a live Amazon UK listing so you can check the current price, stock and reviews yourself before buying.

Specialist bonsai nurseries

The place to go for an older, better-developed tree or a less common species. Prices are higher, but you can often see the actual tree, get proper care advice, and buy a tree that has already been trained for years. Worth it for a second or third bonsai, or for a gift where the tree itself needs to impress.

Garden centres and supermarkets

Cheap and immediate, and almost always a Ficus Ginseng, Chinese Elm or Fukien Tea. These are fine beginner species. The risk is condition: shop trees are often root-bound in poor soil or have sat in a dark aisle. Look for firm, green leaves, no wobble in the pot, and soil that isn't sour or waterlogged.

What to check before you buy any bonsai

Indoor or outdoor: junipers, pines, maples and azaleas need to live outside, while ficus and Fukien Tea are indoor trees. Size: listings usually give height including the pot. Season: deciduous trees bought in winter will be bare, which is normal. Delivery: live plants travel best outside the coldest and hottest weeks of the year.
