Chinese Elm is widely considered the single best all-round first bonsai — small, fast-tapering leaves, tolerant of a wide temperature range, and unusually forgiving of both over- and under-watering. It's also one of the few species genuinely flexible about living indoors or outdoors, which makes it a safe pick if you're not yet sure where a tree will end up living. See our easiest bonsai to keep alive guide for how it compares to junipers and ficus.
