Juniper Bonsai Tree (Juniperus Procumbens)

Juniper is probably the single most recognisable bonsai species, and procumbens (Japanese Garden Juniper) is the variety most commonly sold as a young, already-styled tree rather than a seedling. It's evergreen, tolerates being under- or over-watered better than most conifers, and its scale-like foliage responds well to pinching by hand rather than needing scissors for routine shaping. Best kept outdoors year-round in a sheltered spot — junipers that live permanently indoors tend to decline over a year or two.
